Running injuries are extremely common and can include back, hip knee and ankle based injuries. At Pearl Physiotherapy Center our assessment of a running injury will include a detailed overview of lower limb flexibility and muscle strength, an analysis of running technique on a treadmill to ascertain running style and potential nuances in technique that may need adjusting as well as prescribed targeted exercises to align, stretch and strengthen key areas.

Types Of Pains and Causes

Runners Knee

Running injuries can occur for a variety of reasons including poor biomechanics in the foot and lower leg. Muscle imbalances often lead to abnormal stresses in the kinetic chain leading to knee pain, or ‘runners knee’- which is an irritation of the knee cap and adjacent soft tissues.

Achilles Tendon Pain

Reduced muscle flexibility in the lower limbs often can lead to problems such as Achilles tendon pain or shin splints. All of the above conditions can be contributed or exacerbated by incorrect footwear or badly worn trainers, muscle weakness and poor core stability.

Hamstring Injury

Hamstring injuries are common in runners. The hamstring muscles comprise of three muscles in the back of your thigh and they work to produce flexion of the knee. They are usually put under greater stress with hill running, or with a ‘kick sprint’ at the end of a race. Often hamstring strains and tears are due to weakness in the muscle group, and poor flexibility. Muscle imbalances often occur between the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups as they both oppose each other when bending and straightening the knee. If the quadriceps are too dominant, this can lead to additional stresses and weakness in the hamstrings.
